Skrilla Knits

Knitting has long been considered antiquated, something for grandmas and whipped little housewives. That just isn't true. Knitting is one of those minute to learn, lifetime to master deals, and I'm in it for the long haul.

Meet Squarey!

He arrived this afternoon from Rowan, county Cork where he lives with his friend, Jess Hutch. Squarey is a very courteous houseguest.

After I caught him doing housework, I told him to get himself a beer and relax:

That loosened him up a bit. Being fingerless doesn't hold him back at all on the guitar. I took this picture right before a ripping solo.

It also didn't keep him from checking out the knitting blogs! I was flattered to find that he is a Skrillaknits fan!

Well, I better go. Squarey just got into Eric's records and is hollering at us to get the party started...

I hate to disappoint him, but Sunday night means French cinema and leftovers:

My new hero, Solange from "Preparez vos Mouchoirs". She knits throughout the whole movie, except when she is having "fits". All three of her lovers got a handknit turtleneck. THUMBS UP.

Meet Pismo.

I FINISHED A SWEATER.

Well, not really. It's more of a sweaterlette. The abbreviated sleeves took about 5 minutes to knit whereas normal sleeves take me eons. The pattern is from Berroco, #241, and the sweater is called Pismo. The yarn is Noro Kureyon #115.

This was a fun knit, mostly because I love Noro SO much. I was also really focused on this one project, which made my progress nice and steady. I'm going to try to keep that up. I am at the start of a three day weekend, during which I hope to organize all my crafty goals for the year. First up is tackling my fear of the antique sewing machine I recently inherited. This is me, but with a sewing machine:

This week I went to Salvie's (my favorite boutique, the Salvation Army) on 50% off day with a few coworkers and totally SCORED. Tons of nice wool sweaters, some with angora! It was a date with destiny...and lots of Eucalan.

OH, I forgot--Episode 7 of Brenda Dayne's podcast Cast On mentioned Webs TWICE. I listen to it while I walk to work so it was pretty hysterical. I forget sometimes that we are Yarn Mecca to a lot of people. Speaking of Webs, has anyone seen the new ads for the new yarns, mostly on Knitters Review? My friend Jazmine is designing them now and they are SUPER PRETTY. It's fun to have so many art-minded friends these days =)

Over and out,

Super-mondo-big post.

My big clean-up felt good. While I was putting everything up on eBay I came across some Rowan Felted Tweed for a song, so I bought it to knit Bloom from Rowan #36. It only takes 3 balls (plus bits for the optional flowers)! When it arrived I didn't love the color (#141 Whisper) so I'm selling this as well. It's really gray with small denim colored flecks, white, black and light blue. Beautiful, but not what I wanted. If anyone wants it, it's yours for what I bought it for, 5 bucks a ball. If not, it's eBay-bound! It is usually 1o, so that's good. It's supposed to be amazing, but I haven't knit it so I can't vouch. Oh, and I ordered some Conker (the blood red shade) to replace this, which was really hard to find. I anxiously await it's arrival.

In other news, I think I might actually finish a sweater before winter ends! And don't laugh, but it's a Berroco pattern. Even though they turn up on You Knit What?! almost every day, I think there are definite winners amidst the cringe-y ones. We got this sweater in the store as a sample, and it's really cute. It looks slightly misbuttoned, as though you're a careless librarian, which is a look I can get behind. This Noro (discontinued shade #115) was going to be a Butterfly, but I decided that it would be way too much pink. It's much more suited to this little number. I switched the excess to lovely watery #150 for a Lindebo.

It is the perfect place to use this button!

The past couple have weeks have been a blur, but before February rolls around, I wanted to document some of my knitterly resolutions. I started by cleaning out my stash (somewhat) and I think there are some Excel spreadsheets in my future. Nerdy, but it will help me keep track of my massive collection of knitting goods. That brings me to my first observation:

*My job. This year was my 'year off'. It took me five long years to earn my B.A. and I'm really hoping to start the M.A. this fall (fingers crossed). Working at one of the nation's best yarn stores has been an incredible and informative experience. I knew I needed a way to pay the rent and I felt enormously blessed to be hired at a place where my insane love for yarn would be useful and not a distracting daydream. Rather than being 'just' a retail position, my employers and coworkers have encouraged me to teach, design and learn all I can about the craft. I often feel like I'm in a giant lab that was created specifically for me to observe the things I'd read about in college. It is an ideal situation and it has also increased my yarn, pattern and book stash by an ridiculous amount. My plan this year is to start working my way through it. I will do that by striving to be more like my coworker Karen, who finishes and wears amazing knits all the time.

*Next thing: design. I've always loved the arts but never felt talented enough to consistently create. I was of the opinion that everything had been done and that anything I created would be derivative, irrelevant or just plain useless. Working in a place where design is a daily concern has been so helpful in changing my mind about my own worth as a crafter. I feel ready to design, and I'm really going to push myself to learn and do much more for my artistic self this year.

This is getting long and psychobabble-y. I think I'll wrap it up, and come back to this when I'm not feeling so effusive.

Cirilia

Addendum! There is a book project that a lot of the Webs gang is contributing designs to, and this is my contribution...details to follow, hopefully!

Okay, over and out for real!

Updated to include pictures...

Not much to show for knitting, just wanted to say I'm selling some knitting related items on eBay. Early spring cleaning! My seller name is witsashtray11 and I am offering:

-10 skeins of a really cool yarn, discontinued Berroco Chai. It's merino wool and rayon acetate, and it's a lightweight ribbon. Very interesting mix of matte and shiny textures in an aubergine/black color.

-A Della Q bag, which I don't WANT to sell...but really should, since I haven't used it at all, and because bags are taking over my apartment.

-Berroco Uxbridge Tweed, my first Webs buy! No plans means it hs to get outta the stash!

-Some Noro, for the same reason the Uxbridge is going.

-Some Lang Venezia mohair which is painfully pretty. The only reason it's leaving is because it is really similar to some yarn I already have on the needles:

-A mixed lot that I think would make a nice scarf:

-200 Crochet Blocks by Jan Eaton. Good stuff in here.

-Men in Knits by Tara Jon Manning. This one is so interesting because the first part of the book covers the psychology of male fashion, and the implications of knitting for men. Yes, the curse is addressed.

-Knitting for Two by Erika Knight. Rowan-ish designs for expecting mothers and new babies. I bought this because the patterns do NOT look like maternity wear. This book has been criticized for that actually, the sizes don't seem oversized by any means.

I keep my books in really good condition and I have a smoke/pet/perfume free home. If any of you win an auction, let me know and I will waive shipping costs and throw in a free surprise. I hope this isn't in bad taste, I just thought I'd give a heads up.

Ta-ta,

Cirilia

Finally!

Aight, so the holidays are officially over. Happy EVERYTHING to EVERYONE! I hope everyone's knitted gifts were well received. My work even spawned some specific requests (a Zissou hat for an old friend, a and pair of house socks for an uncle), which is pretty awesome.

I didn't want to interfere with the Christmas merriment so I didn't bother to make everyone find the one sunbeam in the house and pose for ideal yarn objectification...apologies!

Berroco Foliage in garter stitch for Uncle Rickles.

Schaefer Elaine in feather and fan for my Nana. Both blocked at the very last minute..

Hat for brother Vin, in Valley Yarns Berkshire, with a stripe of Berroco Vibe. I felted the whole thing for extra warmth and to minimize it's poofiness.

Not a great pic, but another hat, this time in Rowanspun Aran, with about two inches of Plymouth Baby Brush Alpaca hiding under the brim, to minimize itchiness. It isn't that elf-pointy, my grandpa is a ham!

Dad's Noro Kureyon hat got the same alpaca treatment, a.k.a. Skrilla's Hat Trick.

These two cuties also got hats (white Tahki Bunny) but didn't get a chance to model them. Their mother got a Berroco Lavish cowl, my version of a baby-proof scarf.

Irena, who has mastered the pout, and her new brother Richard, enjoying the good life.

Here' s hoping your holidays were happy ones!

Back soon with knitterly resolutions,

Cirilia
